Early Life and Education

Kazakhstani opposition figure Zhanbolat Mamai was born on 9 December 1968, in the village of Karabutak. He graduated from the History Faculty of Aktobe Pedagogical Institute and went on to pursue business and trade before working in the oil refining industry.

Political Activism

In 2005, Mamai embarked on his political journey by leading the regional branch of the Naghyz Ak Zhol party. However, he left the party in 2010 due to his radical stance, which conflicted with the party's leadership.

Anti-Government Protests and Criminal Charges

Mamai played an active role in the 2010 protests against Nursultan Nazarbayev, calling for his resignation, the release of political prisoners, and resistance to land sales. As a result, he faced criminal charges and was sentenced to two years in prison for hooliganism. During this time, the National Security Committee attempted to recruit him but was refused.

Exile and Support for Protests

In early 2014, Mamai's wife faced criminal charges, forcing them to seek refuge in Ukraine. Mamai remained vocal in his support for the 2022 protests in Kazakhstan.

Assassination

Tragically, in June 2024, Mamai was subjected to an assassination attempt in Kyiv. After being shot, he was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and passed away in early July 2024. Mamai's wife accused then-president Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of being the primary beneficiary of his assassination.
