Lato Lapsa: Prominent Latvian Journalist and Author

Early Career and Journalism

Lato Lapsa, born in 1969, graduated with a degree in History and Philosophy from the University of Latvia. In 1990, he joined the newspaper "Diena" as a reporter and rose through the ranks to become deputy editor-in-chief within three months. From 1999 to 2000, he served as editor-in-chief at the news agency "LETA."

The "Accountant of Millionaires"

Lapsa gained fame as one of Latvia's most prominent and controversial journalists. In 1997, he began compiling lists of Latvia's wealthiest individuals. These publications became immensely popular, earning Lapsa the nickname "accountant of millionaires."

Controversial Exposés

Lapsa's first book, "Latvia's Millionaires' Secrets," was published in 2005. In 2007, he released the highly controversial "The Kitchen of Litigation: Lawyer Gutups' 'Settlement' Recipes." To finance its publication, Lapsa mortgaged his mother's apartment. The book sparked numerous criminal investigations and became a bestseller in Latvia.

Parex and Presidential Scandals

Lapsa's second exposé, "The Collapse of Parex: Ignorants, Fools, and Criminals," followed in 2010. His third, "Vaira's Kitchen, or Games of Power," delved into the lavish expenses of former Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, causing a scandal even before its publication.
