Azeglio Vicini: Legendary Italian Coach

Azeglio Vicini (born March 9, 1933) is a former Italian football player and renowned coach.

Playing Career

As a player, Vicini represented Vicenza, Sampdoria, and Brescia. His greatest achievement came with Vicenza, where he led the team to Serie B promotion.

Early Coaching Career

Vicini began his coaching career at Brescia but was dismissed after the team was relegated to Serie B. In 1968, he joined the Italian national team staff, eventually becoming the coach of the U-23 team in 1975.

Success with U-21 Team

From 1976 to 1986, Vicini led the Italian U-21 team to several achievements, including quarterfinal appearances in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 1972, 1980, and 1982, a semifinal appearance in 1984, and a runner-up finish in 1986.

National Team Head Coach

In 1986, Vicini became the head coach of the Italian national team. He initiated a rejuvenation process, introducing players like Walter Zenga, Gianluca Vialli, Roberto Mancini, and Roberto Donadoni.

Under Vicini's guidance, Italy reached the semifinals of the 1988 European Championship and the 1990 FIFA World Cup, hosted on home soil. The latter appearance ended in a third-place finish.

Later Career

After Italy failed to qualify for the 1992 European Championship, Vicini's tenure as national coach came to an end. He went on to coach Cesena and Udinese before becoming a technical advisor for Brescia in 1995-1996.

Legacy

Today, Azeglio Vicini serves as the president of the Italian Association of Football Coaches. He is revered as one of the most influential figures in Italian football, having played a crucial role in the development of several generations of talented players.
