Biography of Ba Jin

Ba Jin was a Chinese writer and translator who gained recognition for his novel "Family", which tells the story of the disintegration of an old feudal family and the search for new paths by the younger generation. Ba Jin himself grew up in a similar family, making the theme of his novel deeply personal to him.

Born on November 25, 1902, in Sichuan Province, Ba Jin initially led a carefree life. However, as he observed the struggles of the lower classes and the pressure faced by the youth under the old feudal ideology, he developed a deep hatred for the traditional norms of feudal families. This led him to seek his own independence.

At the age of 19, Ba Jin left his hometown and traveled to Shanghai, where he published political articles and participated in anarchist propaganda. Four years later, driven by the desire for liberation, he moved to Paris, France. There, he was influenced by the ideas of French Enlightenment thinkers and the democratic ideals of the bourgeois revolution. Meanwhile, in China, the Kuomintang party carried out a brutal suppression of communist revolutionaries. Ba Jin, who believed in humanism and democracy, was deeply affected by these events. In his first novella, "The Destruction", he expressed the suffering of a young revolutionary from an affluent family who was doomed to defeat. Ba Jin later stated that this work truthfully reflected the aspirations of intellectuals seeking revolution but unable to find the right path.

During the 1930s and 1940s, China experienced a tumultuous period filled with significant events. It was during this time that Ba Jin achieved great success as a writer. He wrote more than ten novels and novellas, including the trilogy "Love" - "Fog", "Rain", "Lightning", the trilogy "The Torrents" - "Family", "Spring", "Autumn", and the trilogy "Resistance against Japanese Aggression". These works focused on the struggles of young intellectuals against the backdrop of China's complex social and historical situation.

In addition to his literary pursuits, Ba Jin also established a literary journal and translated extensively. His efforts introduced Chinese readers to many works of foreign literature.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Ba Jin, like other Chinese writers, actively participated in the cultural construction of the new China. He traveled to many countries as a representative of the Chinese people, attending important international conferences on peace and nuclear disarmament. Ba Jin wrote numerous works praising the Chinese people, the new society, and international friendship.

One of Ba Jin's notable late works is his book "My Reflections", in which he candidly shared his thoughts and feelings from his later years. Ba Jin's contributions to literature were widely recognized, and he received prestigious awards such as the Dante Prize in Italy and honorary prizes in France, the United States, Japan, and other countries.

Reflecting on his life, Ba Jin wrote in his autobiography, "Since I first held a pen, I have never ceased my attack on enemies. My enemies were all the old traditional concepts, all the unfair regimes that hindered the evolution of society and the development of human personality, and all the forces that killed beauty."
