Biography of Sarah Story

Sarah Story, a British swimmer and cyclist, is a multiple Paralympic gold medalist, a two-time British national champion, and an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

Early Life

Sarah Joan Bailey, born on October 26, 1977, was born with a non-functioning left arm due to her arm getting entangled in the umbilical cord in the womb.

Swimming Career

Sarah began her career in swimming at the Paralympic Games, winning two gold, three silver, and one bronze medal in Barcelona in 1992 at the age of fourteen. She participated as a swimmer in the next three Paralympic Games until she switched to cycling in 2005.

Cycling Career

In 2008, at her fifth Paralympic Games, Sarah won the individual pursuit race with one of the top eight times recorded and also the individual road race. After the Beijing Paralympic Games, Sarah Story was promoted to Officer of the Order of the British Empire. She also competes against able-bodied athletes and won the national championship in the individual pursuit race in 2008, just eight days after her Paralympic victory, and defended her title the following year.

Commonwealth Games

Sarah qualified and joined the English team at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, becoming the first disabled cyclist ever to represent England at the Commonwealth Games and competed against fully able-bodied opponents. She also became the second Paralympic athlete to represent England at the Commonwealth Games, with the first being archer Danielle Brown, who won a gold medal as part of the women's team.

Olympic Dream

In 2011, Sarah aimed for one of the three spots on the British women's team for the team pursuit race at the 2012 Olympic Games. Unfortunately, although Sarah was part of the team that won the World Cup stage in Cali, Colombia in December 2011, she later found out that she would not be going to the Olympics.

Paralympic Success

At the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, Sarah Story secured the first gold medal for the British team, defeating Polish athlete Anna Harkowska. For her achievements, Sarah was nominated for the Laureus World Sports Award for 'Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability' in 2008. Additionally, in January 2012, she participated in the British game show 'Celebrity Mastermind'.

Personal Life

Sarah is married to Barney Storey, also a cyclist who competes in tandem with visually impaired athletes. Barney Storey is a three-time Paralympic gold medalist and a four-time champion in events for people with disabilities.

Overall, Sarah Story has won 5 gold, 8 silver, and 3 bronze medals for swimming at the Paralympic Games and 4 gold medals for cycling.
