Olympic Triumphs in 1968

At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, American swimmer Charles Hickcox emerged as a dominant force in the pool. He claimed three gold medals: in the 200-meter individual medley (2.12.0), 400-meter individual medley (4.48.4), and 4x100-meter medley relay (3.54.9), where the U.S. team set a world record. Hickcox also earned a silver medal in the 100-meter backstroke (1.00.2).

Prior to his Olympic success, Hickcox had already established himself as a world-class swimmer. He won the 200-meter backstroke (1.01.19) and the 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the 1967 Pan American Games. At the 1967 Summer Universiade in Tokyo, he captured four gold medals. Moreover, Hickcox set world records in the 100-meter backstroke (59.3, 59.1), 200-meter backstroke (2.04.9), 200-meter individual medley (2.10.6), and 400-meter individual medley (4.39.0).
