Tahsin al-Hasani: A Loyal French Ally

Early Life and Career

Tahsin al-Hasani, a Syrian political figure, was born in Syria. He received his education in Lebanon and worked as an oil merchant in Beirut before entering politics.

Collaboration with the French Mandate

When France obtained a mandate from the League of Nations over Syria and Lebanon in 1920, al-Hasani joined the civil service. His loyalty to the French colonial authorities earned him the appointment as Director of Police and Public Security. In this role, he actively suppressed nationalist leaders and organizations.

Presidency of Syria

In 1939, al-Hasani became President of Syria following the resignation of Hashim Bey Khalid al-Atassi, who protested the French refusal to ratify Syria's independence agreement. During his presidency, al-Hasani remained unwavering in his loyalty to France and opposed all independence movements.

Unpopularity and Dismissal

Due to his close association with the French authorities, al-Hasani became extremely unpopular among the Syrian population and elite. In 1941, President Charles de Gaulle dismissed him from the presidency.
