Baptiste Dubanchet: French Activist Who Ate Spoiled Food for Ten Months

Transatlantic Adventure with Expired Provisions
Baptiste Dubanchet, a 29-year-old French activist, embarked on a solitary transatlantic journey from Paris to New York City, consuming nothing but expired food throughout his ten-month expedition. His diet consisted of decade-old lentils, rice stored since 2011, and honey from the 1960s, highlighting the global issue of food waste.

Cycling, Rowing, and Facing Perils
Dubanchet began his adventure in January 2017, cycling through France, Spain, and Morocco before crossing the Atlantic in a pedal-powered boat. Upon reaching Miami, he continued his journey by bicycle to New York City. His daily travel distance varied from 40 nautical miles at sea to 40-75 miles on land, with 91 days spent alone on the water.

Risks and Encounters
During his voyage, Dubanchet faced encounters with whales and endured severe storms. A massive whale approached his boat, threatening to capsize or crush it with its tail. He also experienced equipment failures, including a malfunctioning radar that left him vulnerable to collisions while sleeping. Despite these challenges, he marveled at the beauty of the night sky, describing the stars as "millions and millions of sparkling dust scattered across the sky."

Return to Reality and Post-Expedition Reflections
Upon completing his adventure, Dubanchet struggled to readjust to normal life. He expressed feelings of anger, fear, and stress accumulated during his isolation. However, he also felt immense gratitude and joy at having survived the experience.

Addressing Food Waste and Consumerism
Dubanchet's adventure shed light on the problem of consumer waste. He advocates for freezing and vacuum-sealing perishable food instead of discarding it. He also believes manufacturers should eliminate expiration dates on grains and bulk products.
Hallucinations and Cravings
Dubanchet revealed that he experienced hallucinations during his journey, attributed to sleep deprivation and prolonged solitude. He imagined hearing voices and seeing floating figures in the water. Upon reaching land, he savored the taste of pizza, a departure from his expired rice diet.
Previous Adventures with Unconventional Diets
Prior to his transatlantic expedition, Dubanchet had embarked on other notable journeys with limited diets. In 2014, he traveled across seven European countries, consuming only food found in dumpsters.
