Early Life and Political BeginningsBarbara Hendricks, a German politician, was born in 1952. Joining the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in 1972, she embarked on a long and distinguished political career. From 1984 to 1989, she served as a member of the district government of Kleve.
Member of Parliament and Ministerial Roles
In 1994, Hendricks entered the Bundestag as a representative for North Rhine-Westphalia. From 1995 to 1998, she led the SPD parliamentary group. From 1998 to 2007, she held the position of Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Finance.
Federal Treasurer and Minister
After leaving the Ministry of Finance in 2007, Hendricks became the federal treasurer of the SPD. In December 2013, she was appointed Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building, and Nuclear Safety.
Personal Life
Hendricks came out as gay in 2013, revealing in an interview that she would spend Christmas with her partner. Shortly after the legalization of same-sex marriage in Germany, 65-year-old Hendricks married her 56-year-old French partner, a teacher, in October 2017. The couple had been in a relationship for 20 years at the time.
