Early Life and Education
Angela Eagle was born in 1961 and grew up in Merseyside, England. In 1983, she and her twin sister, Maria, graduated from the University of Oxford with degrees in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.
Political Career
House of CommonsEagle entered Parliament in 1992 as the Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) for Wallasey. She has held the seat ever since.
Government Roles
In 1997, Eagle became a junior minister in the Labour government of Tony Blair. She held various ministerial positions, including Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Social Security and Minister of State for Immigration.
Shadow Cabinets
In 2010, Eagle was appointed Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury in Ed Miliband's shadow cabinet. In 2015, she became Jeremy Corbyn's Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, and Skills and First Secretary of State.
Brexit Referendum and Leadership Bid
In 2016, Eagle played a prominent role in the Brexit referendum campaign, advocating for the United Kingdom to remain in the European Union. Following the referendum result, she left Corbyn's shadow cabinet and challenged him for the Labour leadership. However, she withdrew her candidacy and endorsed another challenger, Owen Smith.
Personal Life
Eagle is the first openly gay female MP in the United Kingdom. She is married to Maria Exall.
