Barbara Ewing, a prominent English actress, was born in Leeds to Jewish parents who had fled Nazi Germany. She grew up as the middle child of three, with an older brother and a younger sister. Her father was a physics professor, and her mother was a senior lecturer in modern foreign languages.

Education and Theatre

Ewing studied at Rose Bruford College, a renowned drama school. She developed a strong foundation in theatre and honed her craft on stage before transitioning to film and television.

Film and Television Career

Ewing's cinematic debut came with "Satan's Slave" in 1976. She went on to star in several notable films, including "The Monster Club" and "The Sea Wolves." On television, she gained recognition for her performances in "Space: 1999," "The Glittering Prizes," and "The Professionals."

The Chronicles of Narnia

In 1988, Ewing landed the iconic role of the White Witch in the BBC adaptation of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" from "The Chronicles of Narnia" series. She continued to portray the witch in the subsequent television adaptations, "Prince Caspian" (1989) and "The Silver Chair" (1990). Her portrayal of the complex and memorable villain earned her critical acclaim.

Radio and Personal Life

Ewing's versatility extended to radio as well, where she voiced the lead character, Modesty Blaise, in the BBC World Service adaptation of the classic spy novels. She was married to Robin Scobey, but later divorced.
