Early Life and Education
Barbara Mikulski was born into a Polish-American family in Baltimore, Maryland. She earned her bachelor's degree in social work from Mount Saint Agnes College in 1974 and her MSW from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 1981.
Political Career
Baltimore City CouncilMikulski's political career began in 1972 when she was elected to the Baltimore City Council, where she served until 1977. She unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 1974.
U.S. House of Representatives
In 1976, Mikulski was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Maryland's 3rd Congressional District. She won reelection in 1978, 1980, and 1982.
U.S. Senate
In 1986, Mikulski made history when she was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first woman elected to the Senate from Maryland. She was reelected in 1992, 1998, 2004, and 2010.
Committee Leadership
Mikulski served as the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee from 2012 to 2015. After the Republicans gained control of the Senate in 2015, she stepped down as chair.
