After graduating high school, Appendino began working for Juventus S.p.A. (Juventus Football Club). She then pursued higher education at Bocconi University in Milan. After completing her undergraduate studies, Appendino worked for Juventus for two more years before joining her family's company.

Political Career

In 2010, Appendino entered politics, working for the Five Star Movement to develop Turin's city budget. In May 2011, she was elected to the city council, where she later became Vice President of the Budget Commission. In November 2015, she announced her candidacy for Mayor of Turin.

Mayor of Turin

In a major upset, Appendino was elected Mayor of Turin on June 19, 2016. She won the runoff election with 54.56% of the vote, defeating the incumbent mayor, Piero Fassino. Appendino's victory was a significant moment in Italian politics, as she became the first woman to hold the office of Mayor of Turin.

Appendino's tenure as mayor was marked by both success and controversy. In January 2017, she was named "Italy's Most Beloved Mayor" in a poll conducted by Governance Poll 2016. However, she also faced legal investigations and scandals, including allegations of falsifying documents and mismanagement of public funds.

Controversies and Investigation

In June 2017, riots broke out in Turin during the broadcast of a UEFA Champions League final involving Juventus. Appendino was investigated by prosecutors for her role in organizing the event and ensuring public safety.

In October 2017, Appendino was also investigated for the disappearance of €5 million from Turin's municipal budget. She was charged with providing false information in official documents.

Appendino's chief of staff, Paolo Giordano, resigned in October 2017 amid a separate scandal involving corruption allegations. In September 2020, Appendino was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended, for the Ream company case. She was found guilty of providing false information but acquitted of abuse of office charges.

Resignation and Legacy

In October 2020, Appendino announced that she would not seek reelection as Mayor of Turin in 2021. In January 2021, she was sentenced to one year and six months in prison for her role in the riots that occurred in Turin in 2017.

Appendino's term as mayor was characterized by both progress and setbacks. She implemented several policies to improve the city, including measures to combat air pollution and promote affordable housing. However, her tenure was also marked by controversies and legal investigations.
