Barbara R. Morgan: American Astronaut and Educator
Barbara R. Morgan was born on November 28, 1951, in Fresno, California. She graduated from Hoover High School in 1969 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in anatomy from Stanford University in 1973.
Teacher in Space Candidate
In 1985, Morgan was selected by NASA as a Teacher in Space candidate for the Space Shuttle program. She was the backup for Christa McAuliffe, who tragically died in the Challenger disaster in 1986. Morgan continued teaching in middle school following the incident.
NASA Astronaut
On June 5, 1998, Morgan was recruited into the NASA astronaut corps as a member of the 1998 Astronaut Group (#17). She embarked on a successful career as an astronaut.
