Kenneth D. Bowersox

Early Life and Education

Kenneth D. Bowersox was born on June 20, 1953, in Boston, Massachusetts. He graduated from Rockland High School in 1971 and the United States Air Force Academy in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics. In 1976, he completed undergraduate pilot training at Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi and earned a Master of Science in systems management from the University of Southern California in 1981. Additionally, he graduated from the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School in 1983.

Military Service

Bowersox served as an F-15 pilot at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia from 1976 to 1979 and at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, from 1979 to 1982. He later flew F-15s at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida from 1983 to 1985. Bowersox has logged over 5,000 flight hours in 25 different aircraft.

NASA Career

In June 1985, Bowersox was selected for the NASA astronaut program. He underwent astronaut training at the NASA Johnson Space Center from July 1985 to July 1986.

Space Missions

Bowersox has made four spaceflights:
- STS-45 (1992): Served as pilot of the Atlantis.
- STS-57 (1993): Served as pilot of the Endeavour.
- STS-72 (1996): Commanded the Endeavour.
- STS-92 (2000): Commanded the Discovery.

Over the course of his missions, Bowersox spent 40 days, 17 hours, 37 minutes, and 44 seconds in space.

Awards and Recognition

Bowersox has received numerous awards, including the NASA Space Flight Medal (1992, 1993, 1996, 2000) and several Air Force medals.

Personal Life

Bowersox is married to Janet M. Helms and they have two children. His hobbies include running, golf, and reading.
