Early Life and Education

Thomas Barrack was born in 1948 into a Lebanese immigrant family in Los Angeles. Growing up, he attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he led the national championship rugby team. In 1972, he graduated with the help of the "California Republicans" club.

Career in the Middle East

After graduating, Thomas Barrack joined the firm of Herb Kalmbach, former President Nixon's attorney. However, he quickly left to join Fluor Corp., a major construction company, at their overseas office in Saudi Arabia. Despite the challenging conditions, Barrack accepted the lucrative position due to the financial incentives.

In Saudi Arabia, Thomas Barrack immersed himself in the local culture and language. He became a trusted advisor to two young Saudi princes, managing their investments and earning substantial commissions. During his time in the country, he amassed over $200 million while gaining invaluable experience.

Return to the United States

In 1976, Thomas Barrack returned to California and joined an industrial and office construction firm. By 1982, he had mastered the American real estate market. Subsequently, he worked for billionaire Bob Bass in the real estate sector.

Founding Colony Capital

In 1990, Thomas Barrack founded Colony Capital. With a focus on hospitality investments, the company acquired properties in Manhattan and Paris, including interests in Hilton, Hyatt, and Starwood.
