Biography of Barry Manilow

Barry Manilow, an American rock singer, songwriter, musician, conductor, composer, and producer, gained worldwide fame with his skillful blend of romantic pop, soft rock, and traditional American showmanship reminiscent of Frank Sinatra.

Early Life and Career

Barry Manilow was born on June 17, 1946, in the United States. He began his musical journey playing the accordion, winning a talent competition at the age of 7. This achievement allowed him to enter the prestigious Juilliard School, the best music school in New York, without having to take exams. There, he switched his focus to piano and continued his education at the Music College of New York while working part-time at CBS Studios, sorting mail.

In 1964, one of the executives at CBS offered Manilow an opportunity to work on arrangements. His music arrangements for the Broadway musical "Drunkard" impressed the CBS management, and in 1967, Manilow became the musical director for the CBS television series "Callback." At the same time, he worked on music scripts for The Ed Sullivan Show.

Rise to Fame

In 1972, Barry Manilow started performing in cabarets and also became the producer for Bette Midler's album after they met. His albums consistently achieved platinum status, showcasing his ability to balance romantic pop, soft rock, and traditional American showmanship similar to Frank Sinatra. Manilow holds several records that remain unbeaten to this day: 25 consecutive singles entering the Top 40 in the United States, and in 1978, five of his albums simultaneously appeared in the charts. Only Frank Sinatra and Johnny Mathis achieved a similar feat. In the United Kingdom, three of Manilow's albums became platinum within a year, a success even The Beatles did not achieve. Manilow has been the recipient of prestigious awards in pop music, including Emmy, Tony, and Grammy Awards.

Later Career
