Biography of Chas Chandler

Chas Chandler, born Bryan James Chandler in 1938 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, was a British musician, producer, and manager. He initially started his musical career as a bass guitarist in the trio of British musician Alan Price. The trio later became known as 'The Animals' after Eric Burdon joined the group. 'The Animals' gained worldwide fame and success under this name.

Transition from Musician to Businessman

Despite the band's success, Chandler realized that simply playing bass guitar, even in a highly successful group, was not fulfilling his aspirations for his life and career. In an attempt to explore new avenues, Chandler decided to become a businessman. One day, the entire group burst into laughter upon seeing Chandler in a new formal suit, with his hairstyle conflicting with his new image. This incident marked Chandler's decision to transition into a different role within the music industry.

Discovery of Jimi Hendrix

In 1966, 'The Animals' disbanded, and the same year proved to be a breakthrough for Chandler as a manager. While in a New York club, he noticed a relatively unknown musician named Jimi Hendrix. Chandler recognized Hendrix's potential and soon organized a concert for him in London. As a former member of 'The Animals,' Chandler held a respected position in the British music scene, and many took his opinion seriously. Hendrix's first concert in London attracted the entire musical elite of the city, and his performance left a lasting impression on even the most skeptical British musicians.

Success as a Manager

Following Hendrix's successful debut, Chandler continued to manage him and became the founder of 'The Jimi Hendrix Experience.' He also produced the band's first two albums. In the years that followed, Chandler actively sought and promoted new rock talents. He became the manager of the successful band 'Slade' and remained in this role for 12 years. During this period, Chandler purchased and popularized 'IBC Studios' and founded 'Barn Records.'

Legacy and Personal Life

Chandler's most significant achievements were his involvement with 'The Animals' and the discovery of Jimi Hendrix. He had a son named Steffan from his first marriage. With his second wife, Madeleine Stringer, who won the title of 'Miss United Kingdom,' Chandler had three children: daughters Elizabeth and Katherine, and son Alex. On July 17, 1996, at the age of 58, Chas Chandler passed away due to a heart attack.
