Early Life and Artistic Influences

Bartolo di Fredi was likely born around 1330. In 1353, he and Andrea Vanni leased a studio, marking the beginning of their frequent collaborations. By 1355, Bartolo had joined the Guild of Painters in Siena.

Civic Pursuits

Bartolo's talents extended beyond painting. From 1372 onwards, he held various administrative positions in the Sienese government. In 1381, he became a member of the Great Council, the city's highest governing body.

Artistic Success

Working alongside the esteemed Vanni brothers, Bartolo became one of Siena's most sought-after artists. He received numerous commissions from Siena and surrounding towns. His works graced the Great Council Hall in Siena (1350s), San Gimignano Cathedral (1361-1362), and churches in San Gimignano and Montalcino.

Distinctive Style

Bartolo initially exhibited influences from Simone Martini and Lippo Memmi. However, by the mid-1360s, he developed his own unique and eclectic style. This can be seen in his later masterpieces, such as "Coronation of the Virgin" (1388) and the "Tribuna Carceri" (c. 1388).

Legacy and Family

Bartolo di Fredi was the patriarch of the Cini artistic dynasty. He had seven children, but only his son Andrea survived him. Andrea and his two sons became successful painters, continuing the family's artistic legacy.
