Early Life and Influences

Maurice Boitel was born in Tillières-sur-Avre, Normandy, in 1919 to a Picard lawyer and a Parisian woman of Burgundian descent. He spent his early childhood in Burgundy, where he developed a love for nature and a zest for life ("joie de vivre") that would later be reflected in his art. Boitel began drawing at the age of five.

He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Boulogne-sur-Mer and Amiens before the outbreak of World War II. He entered the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he received acclaim for his talent.

Hidden Resistance and Artistic Beginnings

During the German occupation of France, Boitel used his studio in the heart of Paris to hide Jewish refugees, including the journalist Henri Jeghers. Despite the hardships, he continued to create art, and many of his works from 1942 to 1946 were acquired by a British collector and remain in London today.

After the war, Boitel received the Prix Abd-el-Tif (1946), which allowed him to spend two years in Algeria with his wife and son. Upon his return, he exhibited with various artist groups, including the Jeune Peinture, the Sociéété des Artistes Indépendants, and the Salon d'Automne.

Recognition and Exhibitions

In 1949, Boitel held a solo exhibition of his Algerian works at the Galerie Élysées. Further solo exhibitions followed, including at the Galerie Drouant (1958) and the Galerie Renou et Poyet (1966). He also participated in prestigious group exhibitions, showcasing his artistic prowess.
