Born on January 31, 1938, Queen Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard ascended to the throne of the Netherlands on April 30, 1980.

Beatrix's husband, Prince Claus George Willem Otto Gert, is 74 years old and was a diplomat in the German Foreign Ministry prior to their marriage. They have three sons:

Beatrix has blood ties to the Romanov dynasty. In 1816, Anna, the daughter of Grand Duke Pavel I, married Crown Prince William, later King William II. Their son, William III, succeeded to the throne in 1840. Anna Pavlovna became Queen of the Netherlands, and there is even a city in the northern part of the country named after her.
