Jan Balkenende

Jan Peter (known as Jan Peter) Balkenende, the Prime Minister and General Minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, was born in Capelle on May 7, 1956. After completing his secondary education, he enrolled at the Free University of Amsterdam, where he obtained a degree in history in 1980 and Dutch law in 1982. In 1992, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic of state governance and public organizations.
Early Career
From 1982 to 1984, Balkenende served as a legal representative in the Council of Dutch Universities. He then worked at the Institute for Policy Research of the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA) until 1998. During this time, from 1982 to 1998, Mr. Balkenende was also a member of the municipal council of Amstelveen, and from 1994, he led the Christian Democratic Group. From 1993 to 2002, he taught the history of Christian philosophical thought and economics at the Free University of Amsterdam.
Political Career
From 1998 to 2002, Balkenende served as a member of the House of Representatives of the General States for the Christian Democratic Party, and on October 1, 2001, he became its leader. He was also a member and vice president of the NCRV broadcasting organization, a member of the Amsterdam Regional Forum, the head of the Association of Christian Lawyers, and a member of the Royal Association MKB-Nederland, representing small and medium businesses. He also served on the board of the Parliamentary Historical Group.
Prime Minister
On July 22, 2002, Balkenende was appointed as the Prime Minister in the first government, marking his first appearance in Dutch political circles. On May 27, 2003, he was re-elected for a second term in office.
