Early Life and Education

Born in the Czech lands, the renowned organist and composer embarked on his musical journey at an early age. While studying theology in Olomouc, he honed his skills as an organist and led the monastery choir. In 1904, he enrolled at the Prague Conservatory, where he studied composition under Vítězslav Novák and organ under Josef Klicka.

Concert Career

After graduating from the conservatory, the organist served as the organist of a cathedral in Brno from 1910 to 1911. From 1911 to 1919, he held staff organist positions at various churches in Prague. In 1920, his concert career took off, culminating in monthly concerts at the Municipal House in Prague for the next 12 years. He also toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States, captivating audiences with his masterful organ playing.

Teaching Legacy

Alongside his performance career, the organist taught organ at the Prague Conservatory from 1917 onwards. After the conservatory was transformed into the Prague Academy of Music in 1946, he continued his teaching there. His esteemed students included renowned organists such as Stanislav Heller, Jiří Ropeck, and Jiří Reinberger.

Compositions

Beyond his work as a performer and teacher, the organist composed prolifically for organ, choir, and vocal repertoire. His compositions showcased his deep understanding of musical forms and his ability to create both intricate and evocative pieces. His works continue to be performed and studied by musicians worldwide.
