Vopli Vidoplyasova and Begemoth: A Tale of Two Bands

Vopli Vidoplyasova: From Breakup to Rebirth

In 1991, as the Soviet Union dissolved, Ukrainian band Vopli Vidoplyasova lost its professional footing. With the collapse of the USSR, touring connections were severed, and the band retreated to France. However, upon their return, they found a transformed Ukraine, with Kyiv emerging as its capital. Now, they are firmly established as a metropolitan band and only venture abroad when offered Western-level tours.

Despite the turmoil of the past, Vopli Vidoplyasova remains steadfast in its belief that Russian and Ukrainian cultures share a deep bond, akin to the relationship between Latin cultures in France and Italy. While Ukraine maintains a closer connection to nature and tradition, Russia is more urban and contemporary. Nonetheless, Oleg Skrypka, the band's frontman, acknowledges that Kyiv itself bears the weight of its 1,500-year history, reminding him of Russia's undeniable influence on Ukrainian culture.

Begemoth: A Rising Star in the PIt-Pop Scene

In contrast to Vopli Vidoplyasova's long-standing fame, Begemoth is a relatively new band, having formed just two years ago. Their self-proclaimed genre, "pit-pop," fuses elements of Saint Petersburg (often referred to as "Pit") and Britpop, creating a unique sound. The band members emphasize that pit-pop is distinct from Russian rock, alternative music, or pop music. Rather, it draws inspiration from classic British rock, allowing them to appeal to both Russian and English-speaking audiences.

Begemoth has already released three albums and has received nominations for awards. They have shared the stage with renowned acts such as Mumiy Troll, Tequilajazzz, and Peter Hammill. Despite offers from bands like Mumiy Troll and DDT, Begemoth's bassist, Roman Nevelyev, has declined to perform as a session musician. However, they have recently welcomed a new drummer, Nikolai Lysov, who joins them from Splean.
