Andor Foldes, born in Budapest, Hungary, was a Hungarian-American pianist who gained prominence as a music educator.

Education and Early Career

Under the tutelage of esteemed Hungarian composers Zoltán Kodály, Leo Weiner, Ernő von Dohnányi, and Imre Sándor in Budapest, Foldes honed his exceptional pianistic skills. He subsequently embarked on a teaching career at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, where he mentored renowned pianist Robert Weiss.

International Teaching Engagements

In 1948, Foldes relocated to North America, becoming a faculty member at the Toronto Conservatory of Music. Five years later, he moved to the University of Indiana, where he taught until 1962. Foldes then joined the faculty of Boston University, remaining there until 1974. He continued his pedagogical journey at the University of North Carolina from 1974 to 1977.

Final Appointment and Legacy

In 1978, Foldes accepted a faculty position at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he taught until his retirement. His mentorship played a pivotal role in the development of numerous talented pianists.

As a pianist, Foldes possessed an extensive repertoire spanning works from Johann Sebastian Bach to Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen.
