Béla Bugár

Early Political Career and Hungarian Christian Democratic Movement

Béla Bugár, a Hungarian-Slovak politician, emerged as a prominent figure in the Hungarian community in Slovakia. In 1990, he was elected to the Federal Assembly of Czechoslovakia, where he aligned with the Hungarian Christian Democratic Movement (MKDH). He served as its leader from 1991 to 1998.

Formation of the Hungarian Coalition Party

In 1998, Bugár played a key role in establishing the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK), a unified party representing the interests of the Hungarian minority in Slovakia. He became its inaugural leader and held the post until 2007.

Moderate Policy and Split from SMK

Under Bugár's leadership, SMK pursued a moderate course, balancing the interests of the Hungarian minority with the broader Slovak society. However, his approach faced criticism from some within the party, including Pál Csáky, who succeeded Bugár as SMK leader in 2007.

Foundation of the Most Party

In 2009, Bugár founded a new party called Most (Bridge), a more moderate alternative to SMK. Most prioritized cooperation between Hungarians and Slovaks.

Parliamentary Success and Electoral Shift

In the 2010 parliamentary elections, SMK failed to clear the electoral threshold for the first time, while Most garnered 205,538 votes (8.12%) and secured 14 parliamentary seats.

Vice-Speaker and Acting Speaker

Bugár served as Vice-Speaker of the Slovak Parliament from 2002 to 2006 and briefly as Acting Speaker in 2006.
