Biography of Kurt Biedenkopf
Kurt Biedenkopf was a German politician who served as the Minister-President of Saxony, one of the federal states of Germany, from 1990 to 2002. He was born on January 28, 1930, in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Biedenkopf was one of the first Germans of the post-war generation to seek intellectual stimulation in American universities.

Education and Early Career
Biedenkopf studied law, economics, and political science. He worked as a researcher, lecturer, and professor at various German universities, including Bochum, Frankfurt, and Tübingen. In 1949, he studied politics at Davidson College and obtained a Master of Laws degree from Georgetown University in 1962. He also earned a doctoral degree from the University of Frankfurt am Main.

Political Career
Biedenkopf's political career began in 1973 when he became the General Secretary of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) at the invitation of Helmut Kohl. His task was to reorganize the government apparatus, but the Christian Democrats failed in their challenge to Helmut Schmidt in 1976, which strained Biedenkopf's relationship with Kohl. From 1977 to 1983, he served as the Deputy Chairman of the CDU.

During certain periods, Biedenkopf was a member of the Bundestag, the federal parliament of Germany, from 1976 to 1980 and from 1987 to 1990. After the reunification of Germany in 1990, Biedenkopf was elected as the Minister-President of the newly formed Saxony. His party also won the subsequent elections in 1994 and 1999, securing an absolute majority of votes. He fulfilled his duties until April 2002.
Legacy
Kurt Biedenkopf enjoyed great popularity among the majority of the population of Saxony, despite his somewhat autocratic style of governance. He was often referred to as the "King Kurt" ("König Kurt") due to his dominant presence in Saxony's politics.
