Austro-German Conductor and Composer
Karl Michael Ziehrer, an Austro-German conductor and composer, was born into a musical family. He was a pupil of Simon Sechter, a renowned music theorist and teacher.
Theatrical Career and Military Service
Ziehrer's career began in the theaters of Vienna and Berlin. He also served as a military conductor for seven years with the Austrian army in Galicia. Later, he directed the court orchestra in Wiesbaden.
Light Salon Music
Ziehrer's compositions were primarily light salon music, which includes waltzes, marches, songs, overtures, and orchestral fantasies. His most famous works are the "Lustspiel-Ouvertüre" (Comic Overture) Op. 73 and the waltz "Am schönen Rhein gedenk ich dein" (On the Beautiful Rhine) Op. 83.
