Biography of Benedict Spinoza

Benedict Spinoza, a Dutch philosopher, materialist, pantheist, and atheist, was born to parents who hoped he would become a brilliant rabbi. However, he took a different path in life. As a youth, he became fascinated with physics, mathematics, and philosophy, eventually rejecting Judaism and even changing his name from Baruch to the Latin name Benedict. As a result, he was forever cursed by his fellow countrymen. They proclaimed, "May the Lord God blot out his name from under heaven and deliver him to evil, separating him from all the tribes of Israel, with all the curses written in the Book of Laws... No one should speak to him orally or in writing, provide him with any service, live under the same roof as him, stand closer to him than four cubits, or read anything composed or written by him."

Spinoza even faced an assassination attempt (although the wound turned out to be non-fatal). However, he remained loyal to his beloved science, stating, "I regard human actions and desires as I would lines, surfaces, and solids." He was the first to apply a mathematical method as a system in philosophy, showcasing his audacity and originality as a scholar. Unfortunately, science did not bring him any income, so he had to earn a living by grinding glass for optical devices, despite suffering from lung problems.

During his lifetime, only one of Spinoza's works was published under his name. However, Benedict Spinoza believed that the only correct perspective on everything was from the viewpoint of eternity.
