Early Life and Career
Per Johan Magnus Holmertz was born in Stockholm, Sweden. Little is known about his early life and childhood.
Olympic Success
At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Holmertz made a splash by winning the gold medal in the 100-meter backstroke. He edged out Soviet swimmers Viktor Kuznetsov and Vladimir Dolgov in a thrilling race. However, in the 200-meter backstroke, he failed to advance to the finals.
Four years later, at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Holmertz teamed up with Thomas Lejdstrom, Per Johansson, and Mikael Orn to capture the bronze medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay. He also competed in the 100-meter backstroke, 100-meter butterfly, and 4x100-meter medley relay, finishing in 6th, 8th, and 5th place, respectively.
Post-Olympic Achievements
In 1982, Holmertz continued his success by winning two bronze medals at the World Championships. His first medal came in the 100-meter backstroke, and his second in the 4x100-meter medley relay.
Personal Life
Holmertz was married to fellow Swedish swimmer Agneta Mårtensson, who won a silver medal in the 1980 4x100-meter freestyle relay. Together, they had two daughters.
