Madeline Dirado: A Multifaceted Olympic Champion
Early Life and Swimming CareerMadeline Dirado, born to parents Marit and Ruben Dirado, is an American swimmer who specialized in freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and individual medley (IM). Her nickname "Maya" was bestowed upon her by her sister, unable to pronounce "Madeline." Dirado began swimming at age six, joining the Santa Rosa Neptunes alongside fellow Olympic teammate Molly Hannis.
High School and College Achievements
Dirado graduated from Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa, where she was a three-time state champion in the 200-yard IM. In 2010, she set a California state record with a time of 1:56.17 in the 200-yard IM. She also won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.83.
Dirado continued her swimming career at Stanford University, where she excelled. In 2014, she won NCAA titles in the 200- and 400-yard IM. She earned a bachelor's degree in management science and engineering.
Olympic Qualification and Medals
At the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, Dirado competed in the 200- and 400-meter IM and the 200-meter backstroke. She placed fourth in both IM events, failing to qualify for the Olympics.
At the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials, Dirado qualified for the 200- and 400-meter IM and the 200-meter backstroke. In Rio de Janeiro, she swept the podium with two golds (4x200-meter freestyle relay, 200-meter backstroke), a silver (400-meter IM), and a bronze (200-meter IM).
International Competitions
Dirado participated in the 2013 World Aquatics Championships, earning a gold medal in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay, despite swimming only in the preliminaries. She also finished fourth in the 400-meter IM and twelfth in the 200-meter butterfly.
At the 2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, Dirado won a gold in the 200-meter IM and a silver in the 400-meter IM. In the 2015 World Aquatics Championships, she earned a second-place finish in the 400-meter IM.
Personal Life and Career
Dirado married former Stanford swimmer Rob Andrews in 2015. After leaving swimming, she joined McKinsey & Company as a business analyst, where she worked in healthcare procurement and risk identification. She is currently an employee at the grant-making organization King Philanthropies.
