Benjamin Berkeley Hotchkiss was born on October 1, 1826, in Watertown, Connecticut. In his childhood, he relocated with his family to Sharon, where his father ran a workshop that produced innovative mechanical devices. Witnessing this environment sparked young Hotchkiss's passion for weapons design, shaping his life's trajectory.

Early Career and Weaponry Advancements

In the early 1850s, Hotchkiss joined a gun factory in Hartford, Connecticut, where he honed his skills as a gunsmith, working on Colt pistols and Winchester rifles. In 1856, he designed an improved field artillery piece, acquiring a patent that was bought by the Mexican government.

Innovative Field Artillery and Civil War Contributions

Together with his brother, Andrew, Hotchkiss refined their artillery design, creating a novel projectile for rifled guns. This consisted of two cast iron halves filled with lead, which could conform to the rifle grooves of the barrel, resulting in exceptional accuracy. They also developed a specialized type of gunpowder for field artillery and contributed to an enhanced percussion fuse. Hotchkiss's ammunition system for rifled guns became widely used during the American Civil War.

Post-Civil War Transitions and Move to France

After the Civil War, the demand for weapons declined, prompting Hotchkiss to relocate to France in 1867. There, he established Hotchkiss et Cie, a company dedicated to armaments development. The French government became the primary customer, as the country was at war with Prussia and required an arsenal.

Hotchkiss et Cie: Multi-Barrel Gun and Company Expansion

Hotchkiss et Cie's first major invention was the Hotchkiss gun, a multi-barrel weapon featuring five barrels and capable of firing 43 rounds per minute at a range of over 1,500 meters. It was produced in various calibers, including 37mm and 40mm for land forces, and 47mm and 57mm for naval combat. In 1875, the company moved to Saint-Denis, closer to Paris.

Legacy and Memorials

Upon Benjamin Hotchkiss's death in 1885, his company continued to thrive. His wife, Mary Bissell Hotchkiss, established the Hotchkiss Memorial Library in Sharon, Connecticut, and the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville, Connecticut, honoring his legacy.
