Boston's Musical Prodigy
Born in BostonB.J. Lang was born in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. He inherited his passion for music from his father, who taught him the intricacies of the organ. By the tender age of 15, Lang was already showcasing his talents at Bostonian churches.
Education and Mentorship
Lang's musical journey took him to Berlin, where he studied under the renowned organist Alfred Jaell from 1855 to 1858. He also sought guidance from the legendary composer, Franz Liszt. Upon his return to the United States, he honed his skills further with Gustav Satter.
Titular Organist and Concert Virtuoso
Throughout his career, Lang held the esteemed position of titular organist at various churches in Boston. Concurrently, he captivated audiences as a concert musician, including his groundbreaking performance of Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 22 in 1859.
Conducting Debut and International Tours
In 1862, Lang's musical prowess extended to conducting. His international travels as a renowned pianist brought him to Germany in 1869-1870.
Collaboration with the Handel and Haydn Society
Lang's association with the Handel and Haydn Society spanned many years as their organist. From 1895 to 1897, he assumed the mantle of chief conductor, guiding the society's musical endeavors.
Composition and Legacy
Lang's musical talents extended beyond performance. He composed several symphonies and overtures, leaving a lasting mark on the classical music scene. His legacy continues through his eldest daughter, Margaret Lang, who also pursued a career in composition.
