Early Life and Education
Born in the Netherlands, Johan Willem van Katwijk pursued music education at conservatories in The Hague, Berlin, and Vienna, where he studied under renowned pianist Leopold Godowsky.
Career in America
In 1912, Katwijk relocated to the United States. He settled in Des Moines, Iowa, and became active in the local music scene. He taught at Drake University (1913-1921) and led the university's piano trio. For a brief period, he also directed the local orchestra.
Dallas Symphony Orchestra
In 1921, Katwijk moved to Dallas, Texas. He took charge of the Dallas Male Chorus and, in 1925, assumed the leadership of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra following the sudden passing of Walter Fried. Katwijk remained as the orchestra's conductor until 1937.
Compositions and Arrangements
Katwijk's compositions included the well-received orchestral suite "Holland." He also gained acclaim for his piano arrangement of the Prelude from Bach's Sixth Sonata for Solo Violin, which was published in 1938.
