Born on September 4, 1989, in York, England, Benjamin Francis Leftwich is a young British indie-folk and indie-pop musician and songwriter. Growing up in a family of immigrants from South Africa and Australia, Leftwich frequently moved between England and Australia during his childhood, with Australia becoming a second home to him.
As a teenager, Leftwich developed an interest in music and started teaching himself how to play the guitar. Inspired by the likes of Elliott Smith, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Arcade Fire, he began composing his own songs. His first musical project was the band "Nicoles," which allowed him to gain experience before embarking on a solo career.
Leftwich released his debut solo mini-album, "A Million Miles Out," in October 2010. The album was well-received by both the public and critics, who praised its unique sound and lyrics that explored different themes compared to other contemporary musicians. Following the release of the album, Leftwich embarked on a joint tour with "I Am Kloot" and other artists, performing live shows and making appearances on radio stations.
During an appearance on the program "R2 Saturday Sessions," Leftwich performed a cover version of Arcade Fire's song "Rebellion." His rendition received significant airplay on several radio stations for several weeks. In 2011, the first single, "Pictures," from his self-titled mini-album became an immediate hit and was even crowned "The Hottest Record in the World" by popular DJ Zane Lowe.
In the same year, Leftwich released his first studio album, "Last Smoke Before the Snowstorm," under the label "Dirty Hit." The album debuted at number 35 on the UK Albums Chart and garnered positive reviews from both fans and critics. The Guardian, for example, praised Leftwich's distinctive sound compared to other popular musicians in the genre and speculated about the future direction his fame would take him, whether he would explore new boundaries or succumb to the clichés often found in the works of other musicians.
Leftwich's latest release to date is his third mini-album, "In the Open," which came out in October 2012.
