Benjamin Oliver Davis was born in May 1880, contrary to his previous claim of being born in 1877, as revealed by his biographer Marvin Fletcher. Davis lied about his age in order to enlist in the army without his parents' permission. He received his education at Howard University.
Military Career
On July 13, 1898, Davis enlisted in the United States Army as a temporary First Lieutenant in the 8th Volunteer Infantry Regiment. However, in May 1899, he was deemed unsuitable for infantry service and subsequently transferred to the 9th Cavalry Regiment of the regular U.S. Army.
