Early Life and EducationRobert Weede was born in Buffalo, New York, on February 24, 1902. He began his musical studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
Stage Debut and Concert Career
Weede made his stage debut in 1928. He became a frequent performer with the Philadelphia Orchestra under the baton of Leopold Stokowski. Noted for his rich baritone voice, Weede participated in the premiere recording of Arnold Schoenberg's "Gurre-Lieder" (1932). He also recorded Franz Schubert's "Winterreise" and other works.
Opera and Competition Success
In 1931, Weede sang in the American premiere of Alban Berg's opera "Wozzeck" under Stokowski's direction. He went on to perform in numerous other opera productions. In 1935, he won the Naumburg Young Artists Award.
Pedagogical Career
In the 1940s, Weede began teaching music. He held the position of Professor of Music at Yale University from 1953 to 1974. His teaching legacy continues to influence generations of singers.
Personal Life
Weede was married to the soprano Agnes Davis from 1934 to 1946. He passed away in New York City on April 11, 1994, at the age of 92.
