Biography of Luigi Bassi

Luigi Bassi, an Italian opera singer (baritone), was born in 1766 in Pesaro, Italy. He began studying vocal art from a young age and made his debut on the stage in Florence as a teenager. At the age of 22, Luigi portrayed Count Almaviva in Prague during the premiere of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "Le nozze di Figaro".

Rise to Prominence

Luigi Bassi quickly gained recognition for his exceptional baritone voice and his remarkable acting skills, which allowed him to excel in both dramatic and comedic roles. After joining the Prague opera company, he received numerous roles in Mozart's operas, including the lead role in the premiere of "Don Giovanni" in Prague. It is rumored that Mozart composed his opera specifically for Luigi's voice.

Mozart's Compositions

Luigi Bassi's talent and vocal abilities influenced Mozart's compositions. He expressed his dissatisfaction with the aria "Finch'han del vino" and requested Mozart to rewrite it to showcase his brilliant baritone. The famous duet "La CI darem La Mano" also underwent several revisions until Luigi agreed with the final version. His performance as Papageno in Mozart's "Magic Flute" in Leipzig in 1793 is widely recognized.

Later Years and Legacy

In his later years, Luigi Bassi moved to Vienna, where he gained the patronage and protection of Prince Lobkowitz. In 1814, he relocated to Dresden and worked in an Italian company. Despite his deteriorating voice, Luigi continued to perform Mozart's operas and remained popular among the audiences. He occasionally traveled to Italy for performances, but eventually retired from the grand stage and only sang in oratorios.

Luigi Bassi passed away on September 13, 1825, in Dresden. His legacy lives on as an interpreter of Mozart's compositions, and his brilliant baritone voice is remembered through his portrayals of Don Giovanni, Teodoro in "Notary in La Molinara," and Count Almaviva in "Le nozze di Figaro".
