Austrian Composer Alban Berg
Early Life and EducationAlban Berg, an Austrian composer, emerged as a prominent figure in the New Viennese School and Expressionism. His musical education was guided by Arnold Schoenberg, who profoundly influenced his creative principles.
Breakthrough with "Wozzeck"
Berg's early compositions gained little attention. However, his opera "Wozzeck," based on Georg Büchner's play, thrust him into prominence. Composed between 1917 and 1921, it premiered in Berlin in 1925. Soviet audiences experienced the opera in Leningrad in 1927.
A Reflection of War and Social Unrest
"Wozzeck" reflected Berg's personal experiences during World War I. It conveyed strong socio-critical and anti-war sentiments. The music of the opera possessed intense dramatic power and emotional depth. Yet, it also bore the hallmark of Expressionism's mystical and fatalistic worldview.
Other Notable Works
Berg's other significant works include:Chamber Concerto (1923-1925)
Lyric Suite for String Quartet (1925-1926)
Violin Concerto (1935)
Unfinished "Lulu"
Berg's opera "Lulu," based on Frank Wedekind's plays, remained unfinished at the time of his death. It premiered posthumously in 1937.
