Berihu Aregawi: Ethiopian Running Phenomenon
Early CareerBerihu Aregawi emerged as a promising young runner, earning a bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 2018 World Athletics U20 Championships in Tampere. He further showcased his talent by winning the 3000m race at the African Youth Games and placing second in the combined 3000m race at the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games.
Ascent to International Stardom
In November 2019, Berihu triumphed in the Great Ethiopian Run, a 10km road race. His impressive performance earned him a spot on the Ethiopian team for the postponed 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In his Olympic debut, Berihu finished fourth in the 10,000m.
World Record Holder
On December 31, 2021, Berihu made history by setting a new world record in the 5km race at the Cursa dels Nassos 5K in Barcelona. His time of 12 minutes 49 seconds eclipsed Joshua Cheptegei's previous record by 2 seconds.
International Success
Berihu continued his impressive trajectory in 2023, winning a silver medal in the 10km race at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia. He narrowly missed Ronex Kipruto's 10km world record in Laredo, Spain, by nine seconds, setting an Ethiopian record and the second-fastest time ever in the 10km distance.
Paris Olympics 2024
At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Berihu secured a silver medal in the 10,000m race with a time of 26:43.44. He finished behind Joshua Cheptegei, who set a new Olympic record.
Ongoing Achievements
Berihu's achievements continue to grow. In June 2023, he won the Lausanne leg of the Diamond League in the 5000m race. He also finished fourth in the 10,000m at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
