Bernadette Peters, born Bernadette Lazzara on February 28, 1948, in Queens, New York, is an American actress and singer. She comes from an Italian-American family, with her parents Peter and Margarita (a native of Malta), and she is the youngest of three children.

At a young age, Bernadette made her television debut on the show "Name That Tune" and later appeared on "The Horn and Hardart Children's Hour," where she played one of the main characters when she was just five years old. In January 1958, at the age of nine, Bernadette received her Actors Equity Card. Around the same time, she made her professional stage debut in Otto Preminger's comedy "This is Goggle." She then appeared on NBC in the television movie "A Boy Called Ciske" and "The Christmas Tree."

When she was ten years old, Bernadette performed on the New York stage in the musical "The Most Happy Fella." As a teenager, she attended the Quintano School for Young Professionals and showcased her obvious acting talents, impressing those around her. At thirteen, Peters appeared in "Hollywood Blondes" and played Dainty June in "Gypsy."

In 1962, Bernadette recorded her first song, demonstrating not only her acting skills but also her musical abilities and excellent vocals. In 1965, she played the roles of Liesl in the film "The Sound of Music" and Jenny in "Riverwind," which launched her career.
