Bernard Dowiyogo: Nauruan Politician and President

Early Years and Rise to Power

Bernard Dowiyogo was a prominent Nauruan politician who served as President of Nauru intermittently from 1976 to 2003. He was the leader of the Nauru Party, the country's first political party. With the party's support, he was elected President by Parliament on December 22, 1976, after the impeachment of the first President, Hammer DeRoburt. Dowiyogo served in this role until April 19, 1978.

Nuclear Criticism and Second Presidency

In the 1980s, Dowiyogo became a vocal critic of France and the United States for conducting nuclear weapon tests in the Pacific region. He was re-elected President on December 12, 1989, and served until November 22, 1995.

Subsequent Presidencies

Dowiyogo held the Presidency for subsequent short periods: from November 11 to 26, 1996; from June 18, 1998, to April 27, 1999; from April 20, 2000, to March 30, 2001; from January 9 to 17, 2003; and from January 18 to March 10, 2003.

Death in Office

While serving as President in March 2003, Dowiyogo passed away at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. His death was attributed to complications from diabetes, a prevalent health issue in Nauru.
