Early Life and Athletics Career

Marcus Aimata Stephen was born on October 1, 1969, in the Republic of Nauru, a small island nation in the Pacific Ocean. His father, Lawrence Stephen, was a Member of Parliament in Nauru from 1971-1977 and 1980-1986 and served as the General Secretary of the Nauru Olympic Committee.

From a young age, Marcus was an avid Australian rules football player and later pursued weightlifting at a competitive level. In 1989, the Nauru Weightlifting Federation (NWF) was established primarily to enable Marcus Stephen, Nauru's only elite weightlifter at the time, to compete internationally. His father served as the President of the NWF.

In 1992, Marcus participated in his first Olympic Games in Barcelona. Since Nauru lacked an Olympic Committee at the time, he represented Samoa. In 1993, the Nauru Olympic Committee was founded, and Stephen represented his country at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. He was also a torchbearer when the Olympic flame passed through Nauru on its way to Sydney.

Marcus achieved significant success at the Commonwealth Games, winning a gold medal in the 60-kilogram category in 1990. In 1994, he won three gold medals in the 59-kilogram category, and in 1998, he collected three gold medals in the 62-kilogram category. During his final Commonwealth Games appearance in Manchester in 2002, he won three silver medals in the 62-kilogram category.

In 2005, he was inducted into the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame. In March 2008, Stephen was appointed President of the Oceania Weightlifting Federation.

Political Career

In 2003, Marcus Stephen entered the political arena, becoming a Member of Parliament and the Minister of Finance in President René Harris's cabinet. He unsuccessfully attempted to unseat incumbent President Ludwig Scotty on August 28, 2007, but ultimately assumed the presidency on December 19, 2007, after a vote of no confidence against Scotty.

Following new parliamentary elections on April 29, 2008, where his supporters won a majority (12 out of 18 seats), Marcus Stephen was re-elected as President. He has been instrumental in advocating for constitutional changes to introduce direct presidential elections.
