Early Life and Career

Bernard Germain de Lacépède was born in Agen, France, on December 26, 1756. As a child, he exhibited a passion for natural history, particularly fish.

Natural History Pursuits

Lacépède was appointed a curator at the natural history cabinet of the royal garden on the recommendation of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, and Louis Jean-Marie Daubenton. He became a professor of natural history after the French Revolution and went on to hold various political positions.

Scientific Contributions

Lacépède made significant contributions to natural history through his extensive writings, which included:
