Legendary Hero of Gothic Spain
Bernardo del Carpio, a legendary figure in Gothic Spain, was the illegitimate son of Doña Jimena, sister of King Alfonso, and Count Saldana. Upon discovering the truth about his parentage, Carpio sought an encounter with his imprisoned father. Alfonso initially refused but eventually relented, presenting Carpio with his father's corpse, eyes gouged out.
Heroic Feats and Ballads
Folk romances celebrated Carpio's heroic exploits, including his alliance with the Arabs in their victory over the Franks at Roncevaux and his legendary defeat of the invulnerable Roland. Carpio's enduring legacy is reflected in the two dramas dedicated to him by Lope de Vega: "Las Mocedades de Bernardo" and "El Casamiento en la muerte."

According to legend, Carpio did not die but rather sleeps within a cave in the mountains of Asturias. This enduring myth symbolizes his enduring presence and the belief in his return to defend his people in times of need.
