Bernardo Provenzano, the Mafia's "Beast"
Early Life and Criminal BeginningsBernardo Provenzano was born into a poverty-stricken farming family in Corleone, Sicily. As a young man, he joined the Corleone clan, a powerful Mafia organization.
Leadership and Notoriety
Provenzano's reputation as a skilled assassin earned him the nickname "the Beast." He was also known as "the Accountant" and "the Bulldozer" due to his ruthlessness and intransigence.
Rise to Power
Provenzano's rise to power began in 1958 with the murder of Luciano Liggio's rival, Michele Navarra. Over the next decade, Provenzano was involved in numerous crimes and assassinations. By the late 1980s, he had taken control of all illegal businesses in Palermo, including prostitution, arms trafficking, drug trade, and gambling.
The Hunt for the Mafia Godfather
For the first two decades after being declared a fugitive, Provenzano was not actively sought. However, in the early 1990s, the Italian authorities launched "Operation Clean Hands," which led to the arrest of numerous Mafia bosses. This prompted an intensive search for Provenzano.
Capture and Legacy
After evading capture for decades, Provenzano was finally arrested in 2006. He was considered one of the most powerful and elusive Mafia figures, and his capture was a major victory for law enforcement.
Provenzano died in prison in 2016, at the age of 83. He remains a symbol of the Sicilian Mafia and its brutal reign of terror.
