Early Career and Debut

Klodt's football journey began in the midst of the Third Reich, where he made his debut for Schalke 04 in 1943 at the tender age of 16. His remarkable performance in a 10-1 triumph over Bochum propelled him to stardom. Throughout his illustrious career, Klodt represented two teams: Schalke 04 and semi-professional side Horst-Emscher.

International Success

From 1950 to 1959, Klodt donned the German national team jersey 19 times, netting three goals. During the iconic 1954 World Cup, he was initially deployed as the "outside" right forward, replacing Helmut Rahn. He showcased his brilliance in two matches against Turkey.

Ran's Ascendancy and Klodt's Resignation

Despite Klodt's impressive showing, coach Sepp Herberger opted to reintroduce Rahn for the pivotal semi-final against Yugoslavia. This decision initially raised eyebrows in the media, but Rahn's crucial goal silenced any lingering doubts. Herberger's rationale stemmed from Rahn's exceptional ability to create scoring opportunities, which was deemed more valuable to the team than Klodt's more collectivist style of play.

Later Career and Retirement

Klodt ended his Bundesliga career at the age of 36, scoring his final goal for Schalke 04 in a 1-0 victory over Bulgaria on June 18, 1963. His impressive club career culminated in 330 Oberliga appearances and 131 goals. Notably, Klodt's brother, Hans, was a renowned goalkeeper.
