Luc Zoa: Cameroonian Defender with a Storied Career
Early Years and DebutCameroonian footballer Luc Zoa emerged as a promising talent at the youth academy of Canon Yaoundé. His professional debut came with Sintra FC in the Cameroonian championship. Two years later, he embarked on a journey to Mexico, joining Monterrey for a solitary season.
Career in South Africa and Moscow
Zoa's return to Africa saw him flourish at Orlando Pirates in South Africa. During his two-year stint with the club, he secured the Bronze and Gold titles of the Premier Soccer League. His impressive performances caught the attention of Moscow Spartak, but his tenure there was short-lived.
Trials in Russia
Despite only making three appearances for Spartak, Zoa left a lasting impact. His memorable own goal in the high-stakes derby against CSKA Moscow earned him the dubious distinction of being the first African to score an own goal in the Russian Premier League.
Maiden Loan and Disagreement at Spartak
In 2005, Zoa was sent on a six-month loan to Anzhi Makhachkala. Upon his return, the club's head coach expressed his intention to field him as a right-back, which conflicted with Zoa's conviction as a central defender. The disagreement resulted in Zoa's relegation to Spartak's reserve team, where he suffered a severe cheekbone fracture.
Second Stint at Anzhi and Contract Dispute
Zoa eventually signed a permanent contract with Anzhi, where he spent two seasons. However, a dispute with the head coach led to his departure mid-season. Anzhi's failure to honor contractual obligations prompted the Russian Football Union to prohibit the club from registering new players.
Return to Cameroon and Indonesia
Following his departure from Anzhi, Zoa returned to his homeland, joining an amateur league club while also working with a personal trainer. Simultaneously, he pursued a business venture related to automobile sales.
In 2011, Zoa embarked on a new chapter in his career, signing with Indonesian club Persisam Putra Samarinda.
Nickname and Interesting Facts
Zoa's nickname at Spartak was "Tri-A" (Thirty A), a play on the Russian letters on his jersey, which spelled out "ЗОА" (ZOA). The first five Russian words he learned were "thank you" and four expletives.
Zoa faced instances of racism during his time in Russia, including an incident involving a gift of bananas from opposing fans and derogatory remarks from a player during an Anzhi match.
Despite the challenges, Zoa maintains fond memories of his time in Moscow, particularly his love for eating chicken and his peculiar habit of throwing the bones under his bed, which some teammates speculated was a voodoo ritual.
