Early Life and Career
Bertram Jacobson, better known as Bert Parks, was born on December 30, 1914, in Atlanta, Georgia. After graduating from Marist High School, Parks landed his first radio job at Atlanta's WGST at the age of 16. By 19, he had relocated to New York City, where he joined the Eddie Cantor Show as a singer and comedic sidekick.
Radio and Television Host
In 1948, Parks became the first host of "Break the Bank," a television adaptation of the popular radio quiz show. He went on to host several other game shows and music programs, including "Stop the Music" and "Monitor." Additionally, he became a regular host of the long-running NBC radio show "Party Line," which premiered in 1947 and ran for 20 years.
Miss America Pageant
Parks is perhaps best known as the longtime host of the Miss America pageant, which he anchored from 1955 to 1979. His signature song, "There She Is," became synonymous with the event. However, he was abruptly fired in 1979 due to the show's desire to appeal to a younger audience.
Later Career and Legacy
After his departure from Miss America, Parks continued to work in television and appeared in films, including a memorable cameo as himself in the 1990 comedy "The Freshman." He also starred in his own variety show, "The Bert Parks Show." Parks passed away on February 2, 1992, at the age of 77, from lung cancer.
Recognition and Impact
Bert Parks' legacy lives on through his numerous television appearances and his iconic association with the Miss America pageant. His classic recording of "There She Is, Miss America" continues to be played annually as the new queen takes the stage. Parks was a beloved figure in the entertainment industry and is remembered for his infectious enthusiasm and signature phrase, "May I have your attention, please?"
