Bertrand Blier is a French director known for his unique blend of naturalism, delicate lyricism, and mysticism in his films. He began his career as a documentary filmmaker in the style of the so-called cinema verite movement. His first feature film was "Si J'Etais Un Espion" (1967).

Blier caught the attention of the international film audience with his film "Going Places" (1974), which marked the beginning of his stellar career. The film not only propelled Blier to fame but also launched the careers of Gerard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere, and Miou-Miou. However, it was his film "Get Out Your Handkerchiefs" (1978) that brought him true acclaim. The film, which once again featured the same trio of actors, won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Blier's fascination with surrealism was evident in his next film, "Buffet Froid" (1979), starring Gerard Depardieu and Blier's father, French actor Bernard Blier. This film showcased the director's experimentation with surrealistic elements.
